Did we overpay for my wedding ring?

January 3rd, 2011

I feel like after we bought the ring and we were looking at some other rings later that maybe we overpaid. What is so special about this ring that it cost more than another 1 carat ring? Im so confused. Any help would be great. Thanks! Here are the specs:

Metals:TITANIUM WHITE GOLD WHITE GOLD
Diamond Total Weight: 1 CT.
Primary Diamond Cut: 4 PRINCESS-CUTS
Primary Diamond Color: HI
Primary Diamond Clarity: I1-I2
Primary Diamond Setting:INVISIBLE SETTING
Primary Diamond Weight: 1/2 CT.
Diamond Sidestone Cuts: 8 PRINCESS-CUTS
Diamond Sidestone Minimum Color: HI
Diamond Sidestone Minimum Clarity: I1-I2
Diamond Sidestone Settings:CHANNEL SETTING
Dimension Height: 6.00MM
I paid 00 for my ring at Kay Jewlers…
The term "invisible set diamond ring" means what it implies: it’s a special form of diamond ring in which the diamonds are set so cunningly that no metal is visible — no prongs, no beads, no channels. This doesn’t mean that the stone is glued on (can you say "tacky?"), only that the setting itself isn’t obvious. Invisible set diamond rings use a variation of the pavé setting that requires a special kind of stone as well as a special setting. Therefore, invisible set diamond rings always have multiple square-cut stones, since this is required in order for the invisible setting to work.
here is the ring…

Do you wear your wedding ring all the time?

December 31st, 2010

My husband wears his wedding band all the time. He takes it off only when he showers. He’s even in Afghanistan right now and refused to leave it here with me when I offered to keep it while he was deployed. I on the other hand only wear my rings when I’m going out. I have a pretty large ring (about 2 & 1/3 carats) and I have a band on each side. Both bands are curved because the head of my engagement ring is so big, so I can’t wear them by theirselves. My hubby and I have only been married a year and a half and I know he is sentimental because his ring is a bit big (its titanium and can’t be sized) because I bought it while he was at basic training and had no way of knowing what size to get and our wedding was 2 days after he graduated basic. Well, I wanted to buy him a new, nicer ring but he didn’t want one, even though his is too big and it was a cheap one that cost like . I was just wondering how you all felt about wearing your wedding rings. I feel bad sometimes because my husband is so sweet, sentimental, and romantic and I’m not as romantic or sentimental as he is. (He and I really are opposites, so I guess opposites attract.) Any other husbands/wives have a spouse that wears their band all the time and you don’t?
Communist- my husband wears his even when he is on missions. They advised him not to seeing as he could be degloved, but he wears it anyway. Their rules are as long as its a wedding band or something religious you can wear it. He also wears a necklace that’s a small cross that belonged to me.

My husband's wedding band causes a white ring and makes his finger stinky… Ideas?

December 30th, 2010

Well, we found a really gorgeous engraved titanium ring for my husband’s wedding band. It’s pretty thick and fits pretty tightly. We’ve been married for less than two months, but a couple of days after the wedding, my husband showed me that the where the band was on his finger turned his skin white. It doesn’t appear to be a reaction, but a similar problem to when you have a bandaid on too long. It also gets an icky smell (like foot odor)… Yikes!
I told him to remove it at night, to take it off when he washes his hands, and to dry it really well. He’s been doing all those things. He also occasionally takes it off and moves it over to the other hand a few hours a day.
What else can he do? Has anyone had this problem and found a solution? I suggested putting Baby Gold Bond powder on his finger after washing and drying. I am wondering if maybe anti-perspirant might also help.
We love the ring and would hate to have to get him a different one, but I don’t want him to have to put up with stinky finger to wear it!
Thanks!
Hmm. We are certain it isn’t really an allergy. There is no redness or itching, just the whiteness and wrinkliness that occurs when your skin is damp for too long. I am afraid the ring might be a little tight–I’ve told him that all along, but he insists that it fits fine. Unfortunately, it’s true that titanium can’t be resized, and that ring only comes in full sizes, not half-sizes. If anyone can think of anything short of him not wearing it or us having to purchase another, I’d greatly appreciate it!

titanium tungsten steel wedding rings?

How much did you actually spend on your wife`s engagement/wedding ring? Did you "upgrade" it years later?

November 22nd, 2010

Y!A has a featured question about how much you SHOULD spend on an engagement ring. My question is how much did you ACTUALLY spend? In my case, I found out how much she was paying for my wedding band. I spend the same amount on the rings for her.
When I got married, my (future) wife spent about 0 on my wedding band, and that’s just about what I spent on her rings. For our 10 year anniversary, she got the big ,000 ring because i wanted her to have it. Plus she deserved it after 15 years of putting up with me, lol (5 years dating, 10 years married). At the age of 35, we could afford it alot better than we could have when we were 20 year old college students. II think its unethical for sleazy jeweler salesmen to try to convince a young couple just starting out in life, that it`s "tradition" or "expected that they spend three months income on the ring. But, i digress. How much did you spend on her ring, and did you ever go back and "upgrade" it years later when you were more financially secure? I don’t have a picture of my wife`s ring, it was made for her, but, for the curious, here is a link to mine. (lol i told her that if she wanted a diamond, i wanted one too. I was joking, but she found a male ring, with a tension set diamond that i absolutely loved)

My ring- Triton Black titanium (Black Ti™) 18k gold band, 1/8 carat diamond

i gave everyone a thumbs up so far, thank you for your answers. I do wonder though, when you ask a question like this, and there is no right or wrong answer, how do you pick best answer when they are all good?

10 POINTS TO BEST ANSWER, Which wedding band looks better?

November 13th, 2010

First of all, before you criticize me for buying a tungsten band , I’m a Airplane Mechanic. In the past 10 years I have broken 1 gold ring at work, and destroyed about 3 titanium casual rings. So the local ring shop recommended tungsten because it does not scratch, so here they are. Now before u see the cheap price tag, just remember these bands are about 5 times as much if you buy em from a walk in store.

( This one looks silver, but it’s darker, a very shiny gun Metal grey color almost )

( This one is a solid silver color, and has a higher shine. Also is not grey, solid silver color)

What's happening at a molecular level with smell? Do metals evaporate?

November 10th, 2010

I’m aware that smells and odours are caused by molecules/volatiles in the air. I always imagined this means that volatile molecules, atoms, compounds, what have you, either react with something in air, changing state or making a new compound, or simply evaporating.

The thing that puzzles me is that even metal has a very distinctive smell as do even very non-reactive metals (I have no gold around me to check this statement against but I have a titanium ring that does, correct me if I’m wrong).

So if even non-reactive metals smell, does that mean they are, at some very small level, evaporating?

Now I never got to grips with moles in chemistry but I get the idea that there are a ridiculously large amounts of atoms in even, say, a shot glass of water, so my next question is just a ‘what if’, and probably plain unrealistic but here it is:

If (IF) metal evaporates and all other variables are neutralised, how long would it take a small gold wedding ring to dissipate?

can someone wear an alternate wedding band?

November 9th, 2010

I’m in the US military and i just got married. the ring i chose was a tungsten carbide wedding band, because of its strength and shine even after a rough life. well, come to find out, tungsten can’t be cut or bent and there are few ways to destroy it, in everyday life. they have attempts to destroy it on YouTube.com, if you’re ever interested in watching someone try to destroy different types of wedding bands. its highly unlikely but likely enough that it could pose a safety hazard in my work environment, and if (for instance) my hand was ever smashed and began swelling, I would basically lose my ring finger. so as an alternative, i was going to buy an alternative ring to wear at work. i was thinking black titanium (tungsten is 4x stronger than titanium). I love my tungsten ring and get compliments daily on how good it looks. its nice because I know in 10 years, i’ll still be getting compliments on how nice it looks.
I suppose I could just not wear my ring at work, but i am the type, now, that really feels like i need to keep it on me, all the time. so my question is, is wearing a second wedding band or alternate wedding and bad because its not the one my wife chose, or is this something I should bring up to the boss (my wife)? i’m pretty new to the marriage life, and i’m trying to do my best. My whole family (parents, aunts and uncles) are all divorced so i’m going to do my best with my wife and my own family.
thanks
Wow 7 hours and so many replies. Well, I guess I’ll take most all of your advice and talk to my wife, most likely buy a cheaper ring of her choosing, something I’ll wear when I’m at work, and take off when work really becomes serious work. If I lose it, it’s ok. If I can get 1 for a good price, I might buy a bunch.
It’s important for me to be a good husband to my wife. She is learning the hard way about being a military wife so I want to show her I support what we have just as much as she supports me. The more I think about it, I would almost not mind getting some easily removed metal that has little value. I wouldn’t even be against a rubber band, assuming it didn’t look like one (joke). I understand about the guys who have diamonds and what not but have them put on a tungsten carbide band and look at their hand. To me, it’s just as one-of-a-kind as the bond that brought the 2 of you together.

Frugal wedding tips- can you cut this budget for me?

November 9th, 2010

Okaaay!
I have the following left to pay for for the wedding that is September 6th.

DJ- 0
Minister-0
Marriage license- 0
Bridal party gifts (4 of them) 0
candy buffet (instead of favours) 0
groomsmen golfing morning of wedding- 0
wedding bands- 0
clothing for our kids to wear to wedding- 5
rehersal dinner night before for close family/friends- 0
Hair/makeup- 0
thank you cards for after wedding & shower-
Rest of the catering bill- 0 (parents are paying other 00)

I am thinking about skipping getting my hair & makeup done and doing it myself. I am buying basic blank cards from a craft store and stamping my own thank you cards. We have a contract with the DJ otherwise we would just use a laptop for music… but we can’t now.
We’re not handing out favours, but having a candy buffet. Buying candy in bulk, putting it in bowls and stamping white paper bags with our wedding colours and design.
how can I cut down on bridal party gift costs? I paid for their dresses. I am really trying to keep their gifts at around 0, not the budgeted 0… was thinking about framing a nice picture of me with each of the girls and giving them as gifts, along with a mini spa kit (bath bombs, lotions, scrubs, etc).
I just bought the dress for my daughter on clearance for – now my son needs khakis, a white golf shirt, and both kids need shoes.
Was thinking about how to spend less on the rings- a brushed white gold/titanium/silver band for hubby, and a white gold band for myself. Where is the cheapest we can get them? Online is fine, as long as they will arrive on time.
I also need to buy the following–

tea lights
spool of raffia
white paper bags
placecards & bulletin board for place cards
mini plant pots with greenery in them
tulle
green and chocolate brown ribbon
some fake green button mums or something similar
a big wreath form to make a wreath with the flowers

any ways i can cut down these costs even more? I only have like 00 TOPS for the rest of this! And what is the ettiquette on tipping the caterer/minister/dj?

Thanks!

5mm or 7mm for men's wedding band?

November 7th, 2010

My fiance got me an engagement ring in March of 2009 (when he proposed) and due to financial issues he and I have set our date for 2011. Now I have my engagement ring to wear and show the world i’m taken (as he puts it) But he is hinting at the fact he’d like to have one too. I mean with a wedding so far off could a cheap little engagement ring really hurt?

I’ve found a few really nice wedding bands in titanium(the type of metal he prefers). Now the problem is, i don’t know whether to get the 5mm or the 7mm. My fiance isn’t a really big guy. I’ve looked at rulers but i just can’t decide. I think 5mm would look nice, but would 7mm be better?

Any help would be greatly appreciated =]
His fingers are kind of stubby, so perhaps then the 5mm would just be better

Looking for wedding band thats durable?

October 30th, 2010

My fiancee works on cars, ect… and I was wondering what some opinions on a good metal for the wedding band. Maybe some experiences? It does have to be a silver-y color. Thanks. :)

Ps. I have a white gold ring…but he doesn’t want that because it slowly fades to a regular gold. So like titanium maybe? I’m not sure what would be best?

Is Titanium Jewelry good quality jewelry?

I want our wedding rings to be FOR LIFE!

Lost my wedding band. Please Help?

October 26th, 2010

I lost my wedding band and I want to replace it. I bought it online a few years ago but now I can’t find the "shop" that I bought it from. It sells titanium wedding bands with gold engraving on the outside. The designs are in an "island" style and the different rings are named after different islands. I’m pretty sure my ring was called "Tahiti". Can anyone tell me who makes these rings?

Is it ok for me to have 2 different wedding rings?

October 25th, 2010

My fiance and I are both active and outdoorsy type people who spend a lot of time hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing, ect.

Because of that there are many places that I cannot wear my delicate diamond engagement ring. So my FH and I have been toying with the idea of getting a matching wedding band for my engagement ring for work, family functions, dressy events, and then getting me a second ring.

He wants a Titanium band with a wood inlay. We found an amazing Jeweler that does that and makes very durable rings. We are toying with the idea of getting me a matching ring like that for when I am doing things that I can’t wear my more delicate rings for.

It is in our budget

Is this out of line or sound silly?
Sorry If I wasn’t clear. My engagement ring has a matching band with diamonds on it.

What I want is a plain durable band that I can wear that doesn’t have stones for when I am doing things that could damage a ring with stones.
I already have my engagement ring, which I LOVE lol!

Also, to the poster who asked, don’t worry only one spouse lol

Does anyone know if titanium can be engraved?

October 23rd, 2010

Hi! My fiance and I are trying to pick out his wedding band. He really wants something that’s light-weight because he is very much not used to wearing rings and after a bit of research I’ve found a very nice ring that we really like that is very inexpensive however it’s titanium. Because I am getting a very expensive ring with diamonds and all that jazz, I want his band engraved (at a store like things remembered) but I’m worried that they won’t engrave titanium. Anyone know if they will?

What's the durability of titanium or tungsten vs gold?

October 23rd, 2010

I’m trying to pick out a wedding band for my husband-to-be. A lot of people I know get titanium or tungsten rings instead of gold, but how durable are they? My fiance is a mechanic and works a lot in construction- so we’re looking for something that won’t be scratched and banged up easily.

Where can I buy Titanium Rings here in the Philippines?

Is it appropriate/fashionable to have a wedding band that is skinnier than the engagement ring?

October 11th, 2010

My fiance and I are searching for engagement rings, and we are seeming to go the titanium route. The only thing is that the ring that I most like is 6mm wide, and it would be tough to wear a 7mm+ wedding band to go with it. (I have small hands). We are looking to have matching rings as well. Ideas? Experiences? Thanks!

does titanium have nickel in it?

October 10th, 2010

I’ve developed an allergy to the small amount of nickel in my platinum wedding ring, and I’m wondering if a titanium ring would cause the same reaction.
